Kids learn math by controlling their own learning

Psychology Today  (Click for article)
Math is one of the #1 disliked subjects in school. The reasons why are far and vast, but understanding why students struggle is very important to teachers and school administrators. Over the past three weeks, I have been studying Teaching Math to Low Achievers via Eastern Kentucky University online summer course. From this course I have been encouraged to compare traditional math teaching to new ways of teaching math. From recent studies on algorithms, I was lead to this article from psychology today that reinforced my new way of thinking. Should we as teachers continue teaching math through traditional algorithms or should we conform and let our students take control in their own learning?
